Like all Toughbook or Toughpad models, the Toughbook 53 offers an optional integrated 4G LTE modem for Sprint, Verizon or ATT. Do you need a built-in broadband modem? There are essentially 4 ways to obtain mobile broadband in the field. You can 1) obtain an external aircard from your carrier of choice that will slide into a USB port or PC Card slot. You can 2) purchase a "jet pack" or hot spot that will create a small wireless network your laptop can access via WiFi. You can 3) "tether" your smartphone and share a data signal wirelessly. Finally, you can 4) build a modem into a laptop. There are advantages and disadvantages to all four methods. When you build a modem into a laptop, you protect the modem and create a stronger signal stength via pre-wired internal antennas. Most customers who opt for an internal modem do not regret it.
